  1. Since adults with health care debt may carry that debt burden over a number of years, the survey asked adults to recall any health care debt they may have had in the past five years. Recall of health care debt was limited to a five-year time horizon as it may be difficult for people to accurately remember specifics about the type and origin of any debts incurred prior.
