Global Health Policy

This three-day meeting convened by the U.S. National Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Medicine explores the implications of the recent global food price increase and economic crisis on nutrition and health.

The Center for Strategic and International Studies Global Health Policy Center sponsored this event featuring Dr. Michael H. Merson, director of the Duke Global Health Institute, to discuss the unprecedented surge of attention and growth in global health programs on university campuses across the United States.

On June 30, 2009, the CSIS Global Health Policy Center and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, in partnership with the Congressional Global Health Caucus, sponsored a briefing on the current H1N1 flu outbreak.

The Kaiser Family Foundation held a briefing on June 17, 2009, to examine the U.S. government’s role in addressing malaria moving forward, including its strategic options for reducing the impact of the disease, and the current status of the development of the comprehensive malaria strategy.

During this webcast, members of the Institute of Medicine’s committee on the U.S. Commitment to Global Health discussed the committee’s final report that concluded that the U.S. government and U.S.-based foundations, universities, nongovernmental organizations, and commercial entities have an opportunity to improve global health and provided specific recommendations for how these groups should proceed.

This analysis assesses the association between PEPFAR investments and maternal and child health outcomes. It finds that the program was associated with significant, positive improvement maternal and child health, adding to the evidence base that PEPFAR has had positive health spillover effects beyond just HIV.

This Vaccine Monitor survey shows the public is largely supportive of the U.S. role in distributing COVID-19 vaccines globally, as well as other response efforts including the distribution of masks and COVID-19 rapid tests.

This analysis looks at the amount of funding for vaccines and the number of vaccine doses that have been donated to the global COVID-19 vaccine effort and standardizes these donations based on the size of donor economies.

As Congress again considers increased assistance for the global response to COVID-19, we look at how current U.S. global COVID-19 emergency funding is being channeled, particularly to countries and regions.

The COVID-19 has exacted a significant toll on the global economy. This new analysis looks at the economic impacts in PEPFAR countries finding that these countries generally fared worse than their economic and regional peers. In addition, the projected economic growth in these countries remains below pre-pandemic levels.
