Menlo Park, Calif. – The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation announced today that Beverly Malone, Ph.D., R.N., F.A.A.N. has been elected to its Board of Trustees.
Dr. Malone brings her experience to the Kaiser board as a leader in health care, nursing, nursing education, and health policy in the U.S. and in Europe. Dr. Malone is a former two-term President of the American Nurses Association and was a Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She served for over five years as the General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing, the United Kingdom’s largest professional union of nurses.
Dr. Malone is the Chief Executive Officer of the National League for Nursing in New York, a position she has held since February 2007. In this capacity, Dr. Malone leads the nation’s oldest professional association of nurse educators, representing faculty, deans, and administrators at schools of nursing across the spectrum of higher education, from certificate-granting to doctoral-degree-granting programs. Her tenure there has been marked by the NLN’s increased attention to several pressing issues affecting the quality and safety of patient care in the 21st-century: the growing population of older adults and attendant requirement for improved geriatric nursing education; the importance of cultivating cultural competence and ethnic/racial/gender diversity among care providers; the need for the creation of strong academic-practice partnerships; sustainable models of evidence-based best practices; and wider use of technology and simulation in clinical skills preparation.
“The Foundation is thrilled to add Beverly Malone’s leadership, policy experience and real world expertise to our board as we try to help the nation grapple with major health care challenges, including the implementation of the health reform law,” said Drew Altman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Kaiser Family Foundation.
“I am honored to be joining the Kaiser Family Foundation Board of Trustees. This Board is known for its contributions to the most timely issues confronting health care and society,” Dr. Malone said.
Dr. Malone joins a Kaiser board of thirteen leaders and experts with backgrounds in health care, public service, media, the nonprofit community and academia.
