It is important that you contact both the Marketplace and the health plan and let them know you no longer need coverage. In HealthCare.gov states, you can log into your Marketplace account, select the “terminate coverage” option, and enter the required information. The link provided here gives details on how to terminate Marketplace coverage for Healthcare.gov states. State-based Marketplaces may have their own process on how to terminate coverage. If you reside in a State-based Marketplace, click here for the link that will take you to the website for your State-based Marketplace. If you are unsure if you reside in a State-based Marketplace or in a state where the Marketplace is offered on the Federal Platform (also known as a Healthcare.gov state or a State-based Marketplace-Federal Platform), click here for more information.

Do not simply stop paying the premium for your Marketplace health plan as a way to terminate coverage. Nonpayment will eventually cause your coverage to end, but your insurer might still try to collect from you if they think you just got behind on your premium payments. In addition, if the government continues to pay premium tax credits on your behalf to your insurer for another month after you intended for your Marketplace plan coverage to end, you might end up having to repay some or all of that amount to the IRS.

While we have made every effort to provide accurate information in these FAQs, people should contact the health insurance Marketplace or Medicaid agency in their state for guidance on their specific circumstances.
