Employer-Sponsored Health Coverage

We just had a baby. Can I add my baby to the family health plan offered by my employer?

Yes. Having a baby is one of the special circumstances that allow you to add dependents to your health plan even outside of the regular open season. You have 30 days from the date of your child’s birth to notify your employer and request that the baby be enrolled in your coverage. Your notice to your employer will require the employer to provide coverage for your child effective back to their date of birth (or date of adoption or placement for adoption).

While we have made every effort to provide accurate information in these FAQs, people should contact the health insurance Marketplace or Medicaid agency in their state for guidance on their specific circumstances.
