Medicaid Unwinding

Do I have to renew Medicaid coverage every year?

Generally, yes.  However, during the COVID public health emergency, states received temporary bonus payments to suspend annual renewal requirements and keep people continuously enrolled in Medicaid.  Starting in April of 2023, states are gradually resuming Medicaid renewal requirements.  The process typically begins by sending a notice to each individual. Note that the renewal process might look different depending on where you live, so you should check your state’s Medicaid website to see what their renewal process requires. The table below includes links to various state FAQ documents that explain the process and the requirements for renewing coverage.
