Marketplace Enrollment Periods

How long after I enroll in a plan will coverage take effect?

Ver en Español

During Open Enrollment in HealthCare.gov and some other states, if you enroll in a private health insurance plan by December 15 and make your first premium payment by the due date specified by your plan, your new health coverage starts January 1. If you sign up after December 15, your 2024 coverage will begin on February 1. Check with your state-run marketplace to see if different dates apply.

While we have made every effort to provide accurate information in these FAQs, people should contact the health insurance Marketplace or Medicaid agency in their state for guidance on their specific circumstances.
