Filling the need for trusted information on national health issues…

Social Media Manager, Kaiser Health News

Location: Washington, DC
Status: Full Time; 2-Year Term Position with Possibility of Extension
Program Area: Kaiser Health News

About the Job:

Do you want to work at one of the fastest-growing news organizations – with the mission of digging into one of the most important issues of our time? Kaiser Health News (KHN) needs a social media manager, and that could be you. KHN is a non-profit news service focused on health and health policy, and we provide stories that matter to families and people of all ages.

We want our social media leader to create a strategy that will get our stories out on mobile, on the web and in ways that readers want. You will help our community grow, and you will help us understand our readers’ needs. If you care about health – and who doesn’t? – you already know the good stuff we write about. Our stories appear in a wide variety of media outlets from the NYT/Washington Post/USA Today to NPR/PBS to Daily Beast/BuzzFeed.

This is what we want from you: You should think visually and help us push stories across all platforms. We want you to describe how you would do that. Though most people find our journalism on other news organizations’ platforms, we want you to work with our distribution partners’ social teams to expand our reach and to engage more deeply with our readers. We also want you to improve how we use our own platforms. We have a following on Facebook and Twitter – your mandate is to make that grow and then think of ways to spread our work on Instagram or other storytelling platforms.

You have to be organized. You have to be nimble. You have to find this all exciting, because we do. We are a collaborative bunch, and we want someone to join who has good, smart ideas. You have to be willing to learn too. We have some of the most experienced and knowledgeable health journalists in the country, and we pursue serious and demanding projects and investigations. If you were a reporter once – and know what goes into a story – great. Most certainly, we want a social media person who understands analytics and is conversant in what makes people stop and read/watch/spend time with a KHN story. We want someone who has ideas about how to write – and re-write – tweets or posts so they can draw in potential readers who have not heard about KHN.

This is a Washington DC-based job because we want to see you and talk every day.

We’d prefer if you had 3 years of experience doing this kind of work, but we aren’t going to rule out someone who is a go-getter with a little less. Tell us why you want to work at this great organization and why no one else could do this job better than you could. We’re excited to hear from you.
