The European Commission on Thursday began a two-day high-level meeting on nutrition in Brussels, aimed at “ensuring the cause remains atop the development agenda,” the Devex “Development Newswire” reports. “The Scaling-Up Nutrition event comes a day after the release of the commission’s new policy on nutrition,” the news service notes (Ravelo, 3/14). According to a European Commission press release, the new policy “aims to improve the nutrition of mothers and children in order to reduce mortality and diseases, as well as the impediments to growth and development caused by under-nutrition” (3/13). “Some topics for discussion at the event: how to ensure nutrition is included in the post-2015 development agenda, how to develop a resource-tracking methodology and reporting system for nutrition interventions, how to better finance nutrition, and how to engage the private sector in nutrition-related efforts,” Devex writes (3/14). The European Commission also published a memo outlining its action on nutrition in development cooperation (3/13).
