Racial Equity and Health Data Dashboard

Despite being long documented, racial and ethnic disparities in health and health care have persisted and in some cases widened over time, with Black individuals and other groups of color faring worse compared to White individuals across many measures. These health disparities are symptoms of broader social and economic inequities that are rooted in structural and systemic barriers across sectors, including racism and discrimination. Many of these factors have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

KFF’s Racial Equity and Health Data Dashboard gathers key data documenting inequities and the factors driving them.

As of September 20, 2021, 47 states and Washington D.C. were reporting vaccination data by race/ethnicity. Between March 1 and September 20, the share of vaccinations going to Hispanic people increased in all states reporting data for both periods and increased for Black people in most reporting states. In a few cases, these increases were large. The share of vaccinations going to Asian people also increased in most states reporting data for both periods, while it fell for White people in most reporting states. 

In a joint nationwide survey, KFF and The Undefeated explored the views and experiences of Black Americans, including experiences with bias and discrimination in health care. Fully seven in ten Black adults say the health care system treats people unfairly based on their race, and one in five say they were personally treated unfairly because of their race when getting health care in the past year.
