  • CHIP Enrollment: June 2013 Data Snapshot

    Issue Brief

    This issue brief provides state level CHIP enrollment data, adding the June 2013 period. In June 2013, over 5.7 million children were enrolled in the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP.) Enrollment in June 2013 increased by 190,453 or by 3.4 percent, compared to one year earlier. Since 2009, annual rates of growth have remained fairly steady, ranging between 3.2 percent and 3.8 percent. In contrast, during the height of the Great Recession, enrollment increased annually by 7.8 to 10 percent. Overall, CHIP enrollment continued to increase, but growth slow to the lowest rates since the start of the Recession as the economic conditions continued to improve. CHIP programs, along with state Medicaid programs continue to play a critical role in assuring health coverage for uninsured children.

  • Medicaid Enrollment: June 2011 Data Snapshot

    Issue Brief

    This snapshot finds that between June 2010 and June 2011, while enrollment continued to grow as an additional 2.2 million people enrolled in Medicaid programs nationally, enrollment growth in the program slowed as the economy started to improve. Enrollment growth over this period was 4.4 percent, down significantly each of the two prior annual periods.

    This data note examines changes in the individual insurance market under the Affordable Care Act. Through analysis of filings by insurers to state insurance departments, the Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that the number of people enrolled in the individual insurance market grew 40 percent from the end-of-year 2013 to the end-of-year 2014 and has likely continued growing in 2015 as well.

    The House-passed legislation to repeal the Medicare Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) includes a provision that would prohibit Medicare supplemental insurance (Medigap) policies from covering the Part B deductible for people who become eligible for Medicare beginning in 2020.
