MENLO PARK, Calif. – A new Kaiser Family Foundation poll finds that Americans are divided over congressional health reform proposals, but also that large shares of people, including skeptics, become more supportive after being told about many of the major provisions in the bills.
With open enrollment in new health coverage options created under the Affordable Care Act set to begin in October, much of the public remains confused about the status of the law. The April 2013 Kaiser Health Tracking Poll provides a rough baseline of public awareness of the ACA before more intensive consumer information and consumer assistance efforts begin.
In advance of the 2016 presidential election, the August Kaiser Health Tracking Poll examines what health care issues voters would most like to hear the presidential candidates talk about during their campaigns and which candidate voters trust to do a better job of dealing with certain health care issues. In addition, the August Tracking Poll continues KFF’s analysis on attitudes related to the Zika virus outbreak as well as provides an update on attitudes towards electronic health records.
As the problem of prescription painkiller abuse has captured greater attention from policymakers and the media, the November Kaiser Health Tracking Poll explores the public’s connection to and knowledge of the issue, as well as their views of how to address it. A surprising 56 percent of the public say they have some personal connection to the issue – either because they say they know someone who has taken a prescription painkiller that wasn’t prescribed to them, know someone who has been addicted, or know someone who has died from a prescription painkiller overdose. While views of the health care law have been narrowly divided for much of the year, this month more say they have an unfavorable view of the law than a favorable one. The poll also includes views of the uninsured during the third open enrollment period under the health care law.
The October Kaiser Health Tracking Poll finds the divided public’s opinion of the ACA remains similar to the previous month.
The September poll finds with the November election fast-approaching, Medicare trails only the economy and the federal budget deficit as key priorities for voters, and interest in the federal health program is even higher among seniors.

Public confusion over the new health law has risen to its highest point since April.
Confusion over the new health reform law declined but remains widespread, with 44 percent of the public saying they were confused in May, compared to 55 percent in April.
