Chip Kahn

Charles N. Kahn III is a senior visiting fellow at KFF, where he hosts the podcast KFF’s Business of Health with Chip Kahn. He is also a visiting senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) and a nonresident senior scholar at the University of Southern California’s Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics. He serves as co-chair of the international Future of Health collaborative.
Kahn served as president and CEO of the Federation of American Hospitals for 24 years. Earlier, he was president and CEO of the Health Insurance Association of America, where he led the precedent-setting “Harry and Louise” public affairs campaign. Kahn spent many years on Capitol Hill, including as staff director of the House Ways and Means Health Subcommittee, where he played a central role in writing landmark legislation, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and the Medicare provisions of the Balanced Budget Act of 1997.
His work has been published in scholarly journals, including Health Affairs and NEJM Catalyst Innovations in Health Care Delivery.
Kahn earned a Master of Public Health from Tulane University’s Celia Scott Weatherhead School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and a bachelor’s degree from The Johns Hopkins University.
