CDC has paused PrEP coverage reporting to determine the best methodology for calculating PrEP coverage, and to update PrEP coverage estimates using updated methods and sources. Until updated PrEP coverage estimates are published, CDC advises against citing specific PrEP coverage data points, as historical estimates will be updated.

Definitions
Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP): PrEP is when people at risk for HIV take medicine, such as a daily pill or a longer acting method, to prevent HIV. PrEP can stop HIV from taking hold and spreading throughout the body. When taken as recommended, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV from sex or injection drug use.
PrEP coverage: Reported as a percentage, PrEP coverage is calculated as the number of persons aged ≥16 years classified as having been prescribed PrEP divided by the estimated number of persons aged ≥16 years who had indications for PrEP.
The number of persons prescribed PrEP is estimated by using data from the IQVIA pharmacy database based on an algorithm that includes FDA-approved drugs for PrEP. The number of persons who have indications for PrEP is estimated by using data from 3 sources: National HIV Surveillance System, National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.
