2000 Kaiser Media Fellowships Program

Sunday, April 22

8:30am: Working breakfast/briefing at Hotel Presidente with Gail Reed

10:00am:City tour and visit to a Neighborhood Transformation; Workshop with Architect Miguel Coyula, member of the Group for the Integral Development of the Capital (GDIC). These workshops are community-based initiatives, with the help of professionals like urban planners, to transform the broader context of residents for a richer life and healthier lifestyle.

12:30pm:Lunch in Havana’s Chinese community. This is not the Chinatown of New York or San Francisco, but more of a side street hideaway off Calle Zanja, in the heart of Central Havana. The small neighborhood has thrived for over a century on traditions enlivened by occasional new immigrants and influenced by the stronger Afro-Spanish strains in Cuba’s cultural mix.

2:00pm:Walking tour of Old Havana, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site
