My parents buy health insurance through the Marketplace. They earn too much to qualify for financial assistance, but my income is much lower. Can I be covered under their Marketplace plan? If so, can I qualify for financial assistance?
You can be covered on your parents’ Marketplace plan until the end of the year you turn 26. However, if your parents don’t claim you as a tax dependent, and you and your parents live in a state that uses HealthCare.gov, then your eligibility for financial assistance will be based on your income alone. Alternatively, you can enroll in your own Marketplace plan and apply for financial assistance.
If you and your parents live in a state that operates its own Marketplace, contact your state Marketplace for instructions on applying for coverage and financial assistance as a family comprised of multiple tax households.
