I used to be covered on my parents’ health plan, but I dropped off last year when I found other coverage. Now I’ve lost that other coverage and want to get back on my parents’ plan. Can I do that?
Yes, you can get back on your parents’ plan until you turn 26 if they have coverage through work, or before the end of the year you turn 26 if they have Marketplace coverage. You do not have to wait until the next Open Enrollment to enroll. Your parents’ plan must offer you a special opportunity to re-enroll because you lost your other coverage. If your parents get their insurance through their employer, you have at least 30 days from the date you lost other coverage to enroll in their plan. If they have Marketplace coverage, you should have at least 60 days. If you enroll outside of Open Enrollment and your state uses the federally facilitated Marketplace (HealthCare.gov), you will need to provide proof of the coverage loss to be eligible for the special enrollment opportunity.
