Health Insurance and Your Federal Income Tax Return

I had Marketplace coverage in 2025 and have to reconcile my taxes for this year. What’s the most I would have to repay the IRS for tax credits paid on my behalf?

For the 2025 tax year, if you underestimated your income and received a larger advance premium tax credit than you were eligible for, you must repay the difference between the amount of tax credit you received and the amount you were eligible for. However, if your income is less than four times (400%) the federal poverty level, there are dollar limits on the amount you will have to repay for tax credits paid on your behalf. Note that these limits are only applicable for the 2025 tax year. Starting with coverage in 2026, Marketplace consumers will be expected to repay the full amount of any excess tax credits paid on their behalf.
