Luis Gomes Sambo, the WHO’s regional director for Africa, “is in the U.S. this week” for meetings with senior health officials and development agency representatives to discuss collaborating on health, the New Times/allAfrica.com reports.

During his trip, Sambo will meet with Mirta Roses, the director of PAHO, in addition to other PAHO officials. He will visit HHS and the CDC and is also scheduled to meet with U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator Eric Goosby to discuss PEPFAR and “exchange ideas,” the publication writes (Nambi, 2/24).

Sambo “is scheduled to visit the U.S. National Institutes of Health, where he will meet with leaders of the institutes and will visit NIH’s Vaccine Center and Clinical Center,” according to a PAHO press release. It notes that in recent years, “PAHO and AFRO have worked together in areas including health systems strengthening, human resources for health, and vaccine-preventable diseases.”

“Accompanying Dr. Sambo as members of the AFRO delegation are: Dr. Jean Baptiste Roungou, Director, Division of Prevention & Control of Communicable Diseases; Dr. Rui Vaz, Regional Programme Manager, HIV/AIDS; Dr. Francis Kasolo, Regional Adviser, Laboratory/Poliomyelitis; and Mr. Devendre Gopaul, Technical Officer, Governing Bodies,” according to the press release (2/24).
