IRIN Examines How Some Aid Data Artificially Inflates Contributions

IRIN examines how some major international aid donors report their donations in a way that inflates their contributions. “AidWatch, a group of European aid experts representing 1,600 NGOs, estimates European Union members reported US$7.4 billion (EU5.2 billion) in inflated aid in 2010 – that is, the money was actually spent on debt cancellation, on foreign students, and on refugees in donor countries,” IRIN writes. The article looks at other expenses that countries include in their aid calculations and reports on efforts make aid more transparent (5/31).
