Former Liberia President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf Receives $5M Ibrahim Prize For Leadership

The Guardian: Ellen Johnson Sirleaf awarded $5m Ibrahim African leadership prize
“A coveted $5m prize for leadership in Africa has been won by the former Liberian president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. The continent’s first-ever female head of state becomes only the fifth winner of the annual Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership since its launch in 2006, as it is only given out when there is deemed to be a worthy candidate…” (Maclean, 2/11).

Quartz: Africa’s most prestigious leadership award goes to the continent’s first elected female president
“…During her two terms in office, Sirleaf tackled the spread of Ebola in the West African nation, developed the economy, and championed the cause of women. In their citation, the prize committee commended her ‘exceptional and transformative leadership’ in leading the recovery efforts, strengthening democratic institutions, and improving human rights…” (Dahir, 2/11).

“…Johnson Sirleaf, who handed over leadership of the war-scarred West African state last month to ex-international soccer star George Weah, is only the fifth person to win the 10-year-old award. … Despite praise for her role in shoring up peace, Johnson Sirleaf was criticized for failing to tackle graft or do much to lift ordinary Liberians out of poverty” (Cropley, 2/12).
