Data Editor, Kaiser Health News
LOCATION: Washington, DC strongly preferred
PROGRAM AREA: Kaiser Health News
About the Job:
KFF, the non-profit health policy analysis, polling, and journalism organization, is seeking a Washington-based Data Editor to join the staff of Kaiser Health News (KHN), the national newsroom producing and distributing in-depth journalism about health issues across the country.
KHN has a vibrant and ambitious staff based in Washington, D.C., California, Missouri, Colorado, and Montana. We are an expanding newsroom of more than 60 journalists, and this senior position involves not just hands-on work and the opportunity to report, but also strategic and creative thinking about how health care data can be best used in the service of our journalism.
We would like to find someone to lead an ambitious, prize-winning, and fast-growing newsroom’s data efforts and deliver high-impact data analyses for KHN stories suitable for distribution to national and regional media partners. Our stories run in a wide range of media outlets. These run the gamut from traditional print publications (e.g., The NY Times, Washington Post, USA Today, Time) to broadcast outlets (e.g., NPR, PBS, CBS, CNN) to newer online media (e.g., The Daily Beast, Wired)
The Data Editor can be involved at every stage of story development, from story pitch to published article. The successful candidates will have strong skills in story formulation, acquiring data, executing complex analyses, and writing (or contributing to the writing of) compelling stories.
This is also a highly collaborative role and we are looking for someone who can work well with others. Within the newsroom, the Data Editor will work closely with other editors to identify data that can bolster our work. The Data Editor will lead a team of data journalists and also advise KHN reporters who have varying levels of skill and experience and who may choose to do their own analyses. At times, this job requires collaboration with outside newsrooms on data analyses and reporting. Ultimately the Data Editor oversees all KHN’s data-related efforts, ensuring quality and integrity in our work.
The Data Editor will jointly report to John Hillkirk, KHN’s Senior Enterprise Editor and Damon Darlin, KHN’s Executive Editor.
- Management and leadership skills
- Passion to change the world with our work and to motivate those around you.
- At least five years’ experience with data-driven journalism. Would also consider a candidate with a strong background in data analysis in the healthcare field who has not worked in journalism.
- Familiarity with a variety of tools and techniques; knowledge of R is preferred.
- Experience creating and/or editing graphics is preferred.
- Familiarity with statistics is also helpful.
- Experience working in teams and/or collaborating with other newsrooms.
We would prefer the Data Editor work from Washington, where most of our editors and reporters are based. And we are willing to pay to relocate you. But for the right person, we might consider other locations.
We offer a competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, and we have enviable health insurance and retirement benefits.
KFF staff are currently working remotely due to COVID-19. Once staff are able to return to the office this full-time position will be based in KHN’s headquarters in downtown Washington, D.C.
