Geographic Variation in U.S. Medicare Per Capita Spending and Spending Growth Rates by County, 2007-2013

This interactive map displays three measures of county-level Medicare per capita spending:
  • Unadjusted Medicare spending per beneficiary in 2013
  • Medicare spending per beneficiary adjusted for prices and health status in 2013
  • Medicare per beneficiary spending growth rates for 2007-2013.
U.S. counties were ranked in order from highest to lowest on each measure and divided into quartiles. Read the companion report, The Latest on Geographic Variation in Medicare Spending: A Demographic Divide Persists But Variation Has Narrowed.

notes

For counties shaded in gray, data were unavailable. Spending amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar; quartile rankings were determined based on values including dollars and cents. Spending growth rates are rounded to the tenth decimal place; quartile rankings were determined based on values to the thousandth decimal place. More details on the methods used in this analysis are available in The Latest on Geographic Variation in Medicare Spending: A Demographic Divide Persists But Variation Has Narrowed.
