Early Stage Trial Finds Malaria Vaccine Promotes Immune Response In Young Children, Study Says

An experimental vaccine was found to promote immune responses to malaria in young children in Mali, Reuters reports. According to the news service, “The vaccine, which uses an immune system booster called an adjuvant from British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline, targets the malaria parasite as it is actively infecting red blood cells and causing fever and illness” (Steenhuysen, 2/3).

U.S. Government Resumes Medical Evacuations From Haiti; New Food Voucher Distribution Targeting Women Begins

“The U.S. government said on Sunday it would resume military evacuation flights” within 12 hours for critically ill and injured Haitians who were harmed in the Jan. 12 earthquake, Reuters reports (Rosenberg/Brown, 1/31). Medical evacuations had been suspended for a few days, but the reason for the suspension “is unclear as various government authorities have provided different explanations,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

Haitian President Says Up To 300,000 People Could Have Died In Quake

The major earthquake in January in Haiti could have killed as many as 300,000 people, an estimate that includes bodies buried in the rubble, Haitian President Rene Preval said on Sunday at a meeting of Latin American and Caribbean leaders in Mexico, Reuters reports.
