Analysis of Recent National Trends in Medicaid and CHIP Enrollment

The 21 states with declines in CHIP enrollment from actual adjusted February 2020 through preliminary November 2020 represent all types of CHIP programs, including Medicaid expansion programs (M-CHIP, 5 of 13 states), separate CHIP programs (S-CHIP, 4 of 9 states), and states administering a combination of the two (12 of 29).

  2. Data for Alabama enrollment were recently updated and are expected to be revised with the next data release. The update appears to underreport child enrollment for all months and may have had a small impact on the state’s total enrollment across all months.
