Women’s Health Policy: Contraception
Access to contraception plays a key role in family planning and health care for many women. The great majority of women of reproductive age would be at risk of unintended pregnancy without contraception. In addition to longstanding contraceptives, emerging new methods, including emergency contraception, are gaining attention for their potential to continue to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies. While a variety of effective products are available, many women do not have access to the full range of FDA-approved contraceptives because of barriers such as cost, lack of insurance coverage, and gaps in knowledge. Contributing factors that facilitate women's access to contraception include comprehensive insurance coverage, public education and outreach, and supportive state and federal policies.
