A major goal of national health care reform is to provide affordable health insurance to millions of Americans who are currently uninsured. Several major health reform proposals take a similar approach to this goal: They would expand Medicaid to all individuals up to a specific income level and provide subsidies for low- to middle-income individuals to purchase health insurance coverage.
This series of four briefs examines who the uninsured are and explores how they could be affected by a modeled health reform scenario, including estimates of how many might qualify for coverage under a Medicaid expansion, how many would be eligible for subsidies and how many would not be eligible for such help. The first brief examines the outlook for the uninsured nonelderly population, while the additional three look specifically at uninsured children, uninsured parents and uninsured childless adults, respectively.
