Survey of Undocumented Latino Immigrants in California Finds "Search for Work" The Number One Reason For Immigration

A new survey of undocumented Latino immigrants in California conducted by the Project HOPE Center for Health Affairs and funded by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that Latino immigrants cite "looking for work" as the most important reason for immigrating to the U.S. Few cited immigration to obtain social services as a factor and also reported limited use of public benefits such as Medicaid. The vast majority of undocumented Latinos surveyed were uninsured and had poverty-level incomes.

The results of the survey are based on in-person interviews with a representative sample of 533 undocumented Latino immigrants living in the Fresno and Los Angeles counties of California. Sample participants were Latinos who had resided in the U.S. without documentation for six months or longer.
