Since 1997, the public has been more likely to say that the United States is making progress than losing ground on the problem of HIV/AIDS. In 2006, four in ten people say the United States is making progress on the problem of HIV/AIDS, while about three in ten (29%) say we are losing ground, and just over one in five (22%) say the problem is about the same.
