Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health Program Begins Accepting Applications for 2006

Fellowships to Journalists – Print, Broadcast, and Online – to Focus on U.S. Health Policy Issues

Menlo Park, CA – The Kaiser Family Foundation is accepting applications for its newly redesigned Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health program. Starting in 2006, up to ten fellowships will be awarded to print, television, radio and online journalists to research and report on health policy issues. Applications are due by March 16, 2006 and the Fellows will be announced in June 2006.

The program, which combines aspects of Kaiser’s well-established Media Fellowships in Health and Media Mini-Fellowships, aims to provide journalists greater flexibility to pursue individual in depth research projects and features group site visits and briefings on a wide range of health policy issues. Recent site visits include a program in Florida focused on proposed changes to the Medicaid program, and a weeklong series of sessions looking at the health care system for Veterans. The hallmark of the redesigned program is flexibility: Fellowships can run for as long as nine months or as short as a few months, depending on the interest and needs of the journalists and the nature of the activities they propose.

The Kaiser Media Fellowships in Health program consists of two parts: Research Project:

  • A research/reporting project that focuses on a U.S. health policy issue, such as prescription drugs, health insurance coverage, the uninsured, Medicare, Medicaid, health care costs, or racial and ethnic disparities in care. The project can take anywhere from one to nine months to complete.
  • Site Visits and Seminars: Fellows participate in up to five program site visits and seminars with health policy experts and leaders. Participating journalists can also attend the annual program for Kaiser Fellows at the Poynter Institute for Media Studies in St. Petersburg, FL, providing an intensive three-day program on computer-assisted reporting focused on health-related databases.

Applications must be received by March 16, 2006. Additional information and application details are available at http://www.kff.org/about/fellowshipsinhealth.cfm .

Stipends will be awarded based on the length of the fellowship, up to $50,000 for a nine-month fellowship. The program also covers expenses -- such as travel costs and computer equipment -- based on the needs of the project.
