Methodology
The two surveys reported on in this report are the third installment of a series from a joint project by
The Washington Post, the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University. The survey was designed and analyzed by all three partners and conducted by Chilton Research Services. Telephone interviews of 1,511 random-sample adults were conducted nationwide from July 22 through August 2, 1996. The margin error in the nationwide sample is plus or minus 3 percentage points. A companion survey of 250 economists was also conducted. Telephone interviews based on a random sample of economists belonging to the American Economic Association was conducted between July 17 and July 31, 1996. Randomly selected economists who said they were a member of the American Economic Association, employed full time as an economist, have a Ph.D. in economics and consider one of their professional specialties to be domestic economic policy, were interviewed and included in the survey. The margin of error on the economist sample is plus or minus 7 percentage points.
