The first cases of what would later become known as AIDS were reported in the United States in June of 1981. Since that time, approximately 800,000 cases of AIDS have been reported in the U.S. This fact sheet presents an overview of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S., including trends over time, a current profile of AIDS cases, and the impact of the epidemic on particular populations.
