Kaiser Health News (KHN), a non-profit health news service, is an operating program of the Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-partisan, non-profit, private operating foundation dedicated to producing and communicating the best possible information, research and analysis on health issues. With staff and freelance reporters, columnists, editors, photographers, web producers and videographers, KHN is committed to truly in-depth reporting on health issues and developments. KHN provides this coverage on www.kaiserhealthnews.org as well as through distribution partnerships with other news organizations, (KHN’s first partner is The Washington Post). All material is provided free of charge. In addition to publishing in-depth articles on new developments in the health care system and on national and local health care initiatives and debates, KHN will also produce the Kaiser Daily Reports. For more than a decade, these reports have provided readers with a daily synopsis of how the media are covering U.S. health care as well as global health issues.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Reporter will have primary responsibility each day for finding health care news and then writing summaries of media coverage for The Daily Reports. This position will primarily focus on global health, but may include covering developments in U.S. health care policy. In addition, the Reporter will have opportunities to participate in researching and/or writing original news stories about health policy. The Daily Reports Editor will supervise the reporter and this position will require working closely with other editors and reporters. There will be several Reporter shifts between the hours of 5 a.m. and 8 p.m.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILTIES:
- Search online, print and broadcast news sources for articles about U.S. health policy and global health issues;
- Write summaries of stories assigned by the editor on duty;
- Stay abreast of health policy news and information by consulting and/or monitoring various online and offline news sources;
- Generate original story ideas for KHN; opportunities for researching and writing will be available; and
- Help maintain the global and U.S. health events calendar.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with or understanding of news websites, and familiarity with how to search those sites;
- Journalism or health/global health policy experience/expertise;
- Demonstrated ability to write quickly and accurately on deadline;
- Demonstrated ability to work closely with a team; and
- Some knowledge of web publishing/production systems preferred.
