My pal Matt Groening was kind enough to make up this special poster for the
Southernmost annual music festival and chili cook-off on planet Earth.
Matt's Poster
Because of Raytheon and the NSF's desires to keep to a "normal" work week,
the New Year's holiday was moved to Dec. 30th here at McMurdo. Some here
have renamed it Raytheon Day. A couple of flatbed trucks were the basis for
the festival stage, with local landmark observation hill towering in the
background.
Observation Hill Behind Stage
A chili cook-off as well as numerous costumes, festivities, and "antics"
entertained the crowd as much as the music on stage.

However it was disconcerting to see my dear dive hut 19 (site of my first
Antarctic dives; just removed from the melting sea ice; leaving us an icy,
open hole to dive into) converted into hut 191, a "Sawbucks" Coffee Shop,
with free coffee for all. You can see my roommate, "Cruiser", standing just
to the right of the door.
HUT 19 > HUT 191
Here is the stage schedule:
noon--Tony Black/Star Spangled Banner
12:05--Claudette Fournier with a short history of Ice Stock
12:20--Donnie Love
1:00--You Bet your life
1:45--Coldfinger
2:30--Bozo x
3:15--Creepy Wink
3:30--Safety Second
4:15--Legendary Beep Beeps
5:00--Bullhead
Things ran a little late and there was, naturally, an impromptu jam session
at the end of the show. I managed to capture video of all the acts and shot
still images of most of them.

1/2 thru the song MAGIC BUS, we converted Pete Townsend's crowd pleaser
into MAGIC SPRITE, named for one of the main modes of transport down here;
perhaps, best exemplified by the ancient and honorable Dr. Cool.
The best thing about ICESTOCK this year was the fantastic weather. A record
high for McMurdo on Dec 30 of 56F. Certainly warmer than it was back in my
home town of Oakland, or most American home towns at this time of the year.
